The form of folate that is more stable, bioavailable, and soluble is BioActive Methyl Folate (including Quatrefolic). Traditional folic acid supplements must be transformed into the metabolically active 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) form since they are not physiologically active. The enzyme Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is essential in the body's multi-step process that results in this conversion. Due to their distinct genetic expression and patterns, some people have polymorphic variants of this enzyme and do not create enough or efficient MTHFR. It is extremely difficult to convert folic acid to active 5-MTHF when the MTHFR enzyme is not produced in sufficient or efficient amounts.
