Essential oil of wintergreen (Gaultheria fragrantissima) has a distinctive sweet, minty fragrance. It is an excellent oil for diffusions and massage mixtures.

Typically, the mountains of Nepal supply Aura Cacia Wintergreen Essential Oil. At high elevations, it can reach a height of about 8 feet. It typically grows as an understory shrub in mixed woodlands. Every year, over the course of several months, the young tips from which the oil is distilled are collected.

The North American species is a diminutive plant that is very challenging to harvest in significant amounts. Two additional species were produced in China and Nepal by the late 1990s as a result of the hunt for more productive species. These species are hardy shrubs that are simple to collect and grow back in time for the harvest the following season.

Care is advised when using wintergreen essential oil. It is toxic when taken internally, and should always be stored in a safe place where children cannot reach it.
