Because of its potent saponins, yucca root (Yucca schidigera) has been utilized for gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and blood diseases as teas, capsules, and ointments. To treat wounds, skin conditions, bleeding, sprains, joint pain, balding, and dandruff, some individuals apply yucca straight to the skin. Native Americans have employed the root of the yucca tree, a native of the southwest and the Sonoran Desert, for generations to make medicines.
Yucca includes steroidal saponin, an active ingredient that has been demonstrated to lessen edema, stiffness, and discomfort. Studies have demonstrated that the saponins in yucca roots bind with toxic bile acids in the colon, suggesting that they may also be advantageous for colon health. In a University of Toronto study, it was discovered that mice fed saponins had less colon cancers forming than mice not given the substance.
